Summer by the seaside
Set against the backdrop of the North Yorkshire Moors and Yorkshire Wolds there’s plenty of coastline on offer in Yorkshire – forty-five miles of historical, physical and beautiful variation. It’s time to explore!
Time and again tourism guides claim ‘there is something for everyone’ but when it comes to Yorkshire’s coastline, the team here at Wayside Holiday Park are inclined to agree with such a description.
In 1720 Scarborough set the ball rolling for seaside resorts as we know them now and almost three-hundred-years later, it’s still a bustling town and home to England’s first cliff tram. The Victorian funicular railway is well worth a visit for a chance to experience the feel of days gone by. Scarborough has the iconic seaside resort air about it and is a must visit for families wanting to entertain younger members.
If Scarborough boasts pedigree then Whitby has to be the food capital of the coast. The Magpie Café has almost legendary status amongst aficionados of fish and chips, plus The Quayside Whitby was voted Best Independent Takeaway at the Fish and Chip Awards 2014. Possibly the best kept secret in Whitby is the UK’s only Costa Rican restaurant in the form Romerojo’s!
Before sitting down to dinner we all need to work up an appetite and there’s nowhere better to do so than Bridlington’s South Beach. Miles of clean, sandy beaches provide the perfect place for running, walking the dogs, flying kites and good old-fashioned family fun. Our tip is to head there after 5pm during the summer and you’ll almost have the entire stretch to yourself.
There’s a quiet side to Yorkshire’s coast: the charming village of Runswick Bay with thatched coastguard cottage, single pub and tiny café can all be accessed by little pedestrian lanes. Redcar Beacon is free to enter and at eighty feet tall gives stunning panoramic views of the town and surrounding landscape – it’s open until 7pm so a perfect place to photograph Yorkshire’s famous sunsets.
Talking of photography, if wildlife is your preferred subject then make your way down to Bempton Cliffs to see the nesting colonies of puffins, guillemots and more. Bempton is also home to England’s only mainland breeding gannet colony.
There’s so much more to write about but we’d never fit it all in a single blog post. So on that basis our best suggestion is to pick a couple of places, grab the bucket and spade and head off to find Yorkshire’s coastline for yourself! Once you’ve finished don’t go straight home, enjoy peace and tranquillity in one of our new luxury lodge holiday homes at Wayside Lakes, and make it a holiday to remember.
